Transform window hardware with spray paint

Instead of paying that hefty price, we're giving our hardware a DIY makeover with a simple and affordable $10 can of spray paint. We'll show you our process for achieving a fresh look without the high cost by updating your window hardware yourself. The best part about this is that you can choose whatever color you want. We really wanted black hardware, but when we looked into replacing our hardware from Anderson Windows, we found that they didn't even carry black replacements for our older windows. Our only options were white or gray.

Step-by-Step Guide:

1. Remove the Hardware: Carefully dismantle your window hardware, noting how each piece fits together.

2. Clean the hardware: We clean each piece thoroughly to ensure optimal adhesion for the paint. To do so, pour white distilled vinegar into a container with the hardware (don't forget the screws! You will want to spray the tops of them to match). Add enough to cover them completely. Soak for a few hours. Use a toothbrush to remove dirt, grime, and any stubborn residue.

3. Dry hardware: Ensure the hardware is completely dry before painting.

4. Apply the paint with patience: Use a high-quality spray paint, such as Rust-Oleum, that adheres well to metal. Hold the can about 6-8 inches away and apply light, even coats. Avoiding heavy coats is essential, as this can lead to drips and uneven coverage. Allow each coat to dry completely before adding another.

5. Reinstall the hardware: Reattach the hardware to your windows once the paint is fully dry.

Our windows look brand new, and we couldn't be happier with the results. The best part? We saved a significant amount of money by DIYing this project.
